Being A Lifelong Learner In Style!}

Finishing ones education is often considered a necessary landmark to growing up. It is an important period, but eventually you have to put it behind you in order to start being a real adult. Career academics often joke that they are stuck in arrested development, and hence are unable to leave the ivory tower. This is a play upon the idea that you have to leave school behind once you have learned what you need to learn. However, is this really a healthy attitude towards education and human development?

In the United States, there is an increasing trend towards older people returning to school. For many, this back to school move is a means to an end: it is a way to earn credentials to gain a competitive edge in a beleaguered job market. Indeed, always being open to new techniques and methods is linked with business success. The tycoons of yesteryear can be left behind by new developments because they have not kept up to date.

The concept that we finish our education at a particular stage in time is not only unhealthy because it might lead a person to be a stick-in-the-mud who is not open to learning new things. Unfortunately, it also leads people to cut their lives into specific pieces in order to fit rigid notions of maturity. Actually, life need not be divided into strict, mutually exclusive parts. Truly, there is nothing wrong with carrying over some activities and perspectives of a young person, even as you get older.

The common practice of retirement can actually be rather dangerous. This is because the resulting inactivity and solitude can facilitate physical deterioration, loneliness, despair, and dementia. The retirement culture prevalent in the West may be one reason why dementia, memory problems, etc. seem to be more prevalent among the Caucasian elderly than people of other races. Of course, this does not mean that you have to maintain a punishing workload, even as your natural energy level decreases. Rather, retire, but remain active, even if it is not through a conventional job.

Indeed, we can bring the concept of holding on to ones vitality back to education. An older person who takes or teaches classes will, by definition, be getting some physical and mental exercise. Some regular activity can help keep a persons bones and muscles in shape, as well as staving off hypertension and heart disease. Keeping ones brain in working order can help prevent the onset of diseases like Alzheimers. Still, this may seem to be a rather limited, utilitarian view of continuing education: simply as a means to pass the time and hold on to ones sanity. However, participating in a community through giving or receiving education has a far deeper and wider significance. It can give the lie to contemporary ageism, and show that getting older does not mean that you should allow others to marginalize you. Society can and should have a place for all of its members, no matter what their age.

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

BDSM as business: An interview with the owners of a dungeon

Sunday, October 21, 2007

Torture proliferates American headlines today: whether its use is defensible in certain contexts and the morality of the practice. Wikinews reporter David Shankbone was curious about torture in American popular culture. This is the first of a two part series examining the BDSM business. This interview focuses on the owners of a dungeon, what they charge, what the clients are like and how they handle their needs.

When Shankbone rings the bell of “HC & Co.” he has no idea what to expect. A BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sadism Masochism) dungeon is a legal enterprise in New York City, and there are more than a few businesses that cater to a clientèle that wants an enema, a spanking, to be dressed like a baby or to wear women’s clothing. Shankbone went to find out what these businesses are like, who runs them, who works at them, and who frequents them. He spent three hours one night in what is considered one of the more upscale establishments in Manhattan, Rebecca’s Hidden Chamber, where according to The Village Voice, “you can take your girlfriend or wife, and have them treated with respect—unless they hope to be treated with something other than respect!”

When Shankbone arrived on the sixth floor of a midtown office building, the elevator opened up to a hallway where a smiling Rebecca greeted him. She is a beautiful forty-ish Long Island mother of three who is dressed in smart black pants and a black turtleneck that reaches up to her blond-streaked hair pulled back in a bushy ponytail. “Are you David Shankbone? We’re so excited to meet you!” she says, and leads him down the hall to a living room area with a sofa, a television playing an action-thriller, an open supply cabinet stocked with enema kits, and her husband Bill sitting at the computer trying to find where the re-release of Blade Runner is playing at the local theater. “I don’t like that movie,” says Rebecca.

Perhaps the most poignant moment came at the end of the night when Shankbone was waiting to be escorted out (to avoid running into a client). Rebecca came into the room and sat on the sofa. “You know, a lot of people out there would like to see me burn for what I do,” she says. Rebecca is a woman who has faced challenges in her life, and dealt with them the best she could given her circumstances. She sees herself as providing a service to people who have needs, no matter how debauched the outside world deems them. They sat talking mutual challenges they have faced and politics (she’s supporting Hillary); Rebecca reflected upon the irony that many of the people who supported the torture at Abu Ghraib would want her closed down. It was in this conversation that Shankbone saw that humanity can be found anywhere, including in places that appear on the surface to cater to the inhumanity some people in our society feel towards themselves, or others.

“The best way to describe it,” says Bill, “is if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

Los Angeles commuter train collides with freight train; over two dozen killed

Los Angeles commuter train collides with freight train; over two dozen killed

Saturday, September 13, 2008

At least 25 people have been killed and many more injured when a Metrolink commuter train collided yesterday afternoon with a Union Pacific freight train in the Chatsworth district of Los Angeles. Around 250 firefighters have responded to the accident scene.

Estimates are that 350-400 people were on the number 111 commuter train which departed from Los Angeles’ Union Station at 3:35pm PDT. The collision occurred on Friday at about 4:25pm PDT on Metrolink’s Ventura County Line. The area in which the crash took place is hilly and contains a single track; it is just north of the Chatsworth Metrolink station.

The force of the collision sent the locomotive of the Metrolink train to penetrate deep into the lead bi-level passenger car of the three-car train. The collision then knocked the Union Pacific and Metrolink locomotives on their side along with the lead passenger car.

This is the worst accident I’ve ever seen. Clearly the injuries are going to mount and so are the fatalities.

According to various sources, upwards of 10-15 passengers, possibly even more than 20, have been killed, including a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officer. The LAPD has not released the name of the officer. The engineer of the Metrolink train is believed to be another of the fatalities.

The number of injured is believed to be 135, although the precise number is still unclear. According to emergency responders, the injured have been transported to Los Angeles area hospitals, including the University of California, Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center and Huntington Hospital.

“This is the worst accident I’ve ever seen. Clearly the injuries are going to mount and so are the fatalities,” Mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, said.

It is unclear how the accident occurred. Some of the possibilities include a signal malfunction, a failure by a crew member to notice a signal or a lapse in protocol for moving trains safely in the area. According to Metrolink and the Los Angeles Times, the National Transportation Safety Board has a team on scene and is investigating.

In an apparently unrelated incident less than an hour after the crash in Chatsworth, another Metrolink train collided with a car in Corona, California, killing the female driver of the automobile.

Are Cheap Online Fax Services Worth Using?}

Submitted by: Titus Hoskins

In these uncertain economic times everyone is looking for a bargain, even businesses. One area where many company owners look to save on operating expenses has to do with their communication costs which include their faxing services. Many companies and individuals are trying to find the cheapest faxing service available – but is this a wise business move?

While in many cases, cheap is usually associated with poor quality, this same rule does not necessarily apply when comparing online fax services. By their very structure, Internet or web faxing services are much cheaper than conventional faxing because there are no fax machines to buy or maintain, no papers and inks to purchase, and you don’t have the ongoing cost of a separate fax phone line since everything is handled through the Internet.

And while the pricing can be very low, it does not mean the quality of the service is not of a high standard. Many affordable fax providers offer excellent rates but still also offer high quality and good support. But any prudent business person would still have to do their own research and check out these services before they buy, regardless of the price.

For those who are not familiar with online fax, a little explanation is probably needed. Online faxing is simply using your current email system and your web connection to send and receive all your faxes. Your fax is sent as an email attachment, usually as a Tiff or Pdf file. But before you can send a fax you have to sign-up to an online fax provider who will act as an intermediary to handle all your faxes for you. You are given an online fax account where you can log in to check your faxes, you can also send your faxes from here.

The average monthly rates for these services usually range around $8 – $10, but there are some as low as $3 – $4 a month. So it pays to shop around especially when there are also “pay as you go” plans which may be suitable if your faxing requirements are very minimum. If your faxing volume is very high, many of these providers offer custom corporate services and prices so you can bargain for the lowest rates.

Again, just because the pricing is low does not mean the service is not good. In most cases, these fax companies have a proven track record, having provided quality services for millions of clients over many years. And the best feature – most of these same companies have free 30 Day Trials so that you can check out their services first hand and decide for yourself.

Just remember, online fax is not only cheaper, it is also more convenient and more secure than traditional faxing. It is also very portable since any mobile device such as a cell phone or laptop can be used to do your faxing. And since it’s web based, all your faxing is available 24/7, anywhere you have a web connection and these days that’s just about everywhere on the planet.

So the next time you use the old fax machine, just ask yourself, is there a more cheaper way to do my faxing? One that is also more modern and much more convenient than my present system? You might be surprised at how many cheaper alternatives are at your fingertips, patiently waiting for your judgment call.

Virginians melee at used Apple iBook sale

Virginians melee at used Apple iBook sale

Thursday, August 18, 2005

“Total chaos” is how many described the melee that resulted from a sale of used Apple iBook laptop computers at the Richmond International Raceway (RIR) by the Henrico County, Virginia school system.

Officials estimated nearly 5,000 people thronged the sale for the $50, four-year-old computers. Among them were 17 injured, four requiring hospitalization – one for a leg injury, and three for heat-related illness, said Henrico County Police. Reports of trampling in the stampede were not uncommon, and one driver reportedly tried to drive through the throng of prospective buyers.

Alice Jemerson, an elderly customer said, “They bum rushed the gates and I was knocked over, fighting for my life. All these people were on top of me.”

Shortly after 7am EST officials opened the gates and many residents ran hysterically toward the building where the sale was to occur at 9am.

At a post sale press conference, Henrico County Police spokesman Lieutenant Doug Perry told reporters, “A few bad apples found their way inside. It looked worse than it was.”

Apple iBooks are the preferred computer for Henrico County schools, and Director of General Services of Henrico County Paul Proto, said changes were made to the event after tremendous interest was generated, some as far away as Europe and California. Officials closed and moved the sale from the Henrico county school warehouse to the RIR, after residents complained that their tax dollars were used to buy the computers, and they ought to have first right to repurchase them. The Henrico County Board of Supervisors voted to amend the County Code so that only residents could purchase the laptop computers.

Although officials had prohibited camping out and overnight parking, some in attendance reported that people began arriving at midnight.

Henrico Police Chief H.W. Stanley, Jr. said five patrol officers were originally planned for the event, a customary presence for an event the size authorities had estimated. But by 6 am, an enormous crowd was assembled at the front gate.

Officials present before opening told the crowd that automobiles would be allowed to enter first, which prompted many to run to their cars. But while some were running back to their cars, others rushed the gate. The resulting confusion created much anger, and guards closed the gates shortly thereafter.

Long lines encircling the sale building were commonplace, and one observer noted, “They’re going to see themselves on the news tonight, and see what fools they are.”

Some citizens, however, considered their wait worthwhile. Hairstylist and mother of two Sheress Blunt was one of the first hundred to buy one of the iBooks; she came with her mother and said they sneaked into the raceway through a side gate.

Tonya Vaughan arrived at 5:30 a.m., also bought one of the first iBooks and said three people offered to buy it from her for as much as $200. She declined however, saying, “I told them no way! I had worked too hard for it.”

Lt. Perry said many officers were complimented on the way they handled the crowd, adding that police were seen letting children who had been pushed aside, into the building.

Mr. Proto said, “There are no plans right now to have another iBook sale.”

Henrico County Battalion Police Chief Steve Wood said no arrests were made and the iBooks were sold out by 1pm EST.

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Danish clothing company sells T-shirts to support FARC and PFLP

Friday, January 20, 2006

A recently created Danish clothing company is selling on the internet T-shirts in order to support the clandestine radio station of the Colombian guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and the graphical workshop of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In fact the money will be used by these groups to carry on their terrorist activities. FARC activities include kidnappings, masacres, bombs, extortions and the drug trade.

Fighters and Lovers is selling the T-shirts at 170 DKK (US$27.6), from which 35 DKK (US$5.7) are to be destinated to support both armed groups.

Anna Duever, Fighters and Lovers PR chief, said to Spanish news agency EFE that their objective is to “defend freedom and social justice, which is FARC and PFLP are fighting for”. Duever believes the fact the FARC has been included by the EU in its terrorist group list is a “political game”. “We pay our taxes in Denmark, and that money is used for financing the troops our government has sent to Iraq. That’s terrorism. Besides, in Colombia there’s a regime oppressing population and torturing and killing its people”, she said.

Colombian Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolina Barco, said to local media that “financing terrorist groups is unacceptable and goes against all the international norms. Yesterday [Tuesday 19] our ambassador contacted the Danish government, we sent a protest note and have demanded an explanation.”

A year ago, a Danish NGO named Oprør (“Rebelion”) stated it had donated money to the Colombian guerrilla. A new antiterrorism law in Denmark may punish it.

Freak wave rocks luxury liner–4 hurt

Freak wave rocks luxury liner–4 hurt

Sunday, April 17, 2005

The Norwegian Dawn, a 965-foot-long luxury vessel, was struck by “a freak wave that caused two windows to break in two different cabins,” the owners, Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement. It changed course, docking in Charleston late Saturday afternoon instead of completing its planned travel to New York.

The wave, estimated at 7-stories-high, flooded 62 cabins and injured 4 passengers with cuts and bruises. Company spokeswoman Susan Robison said the wave reached to deck 10.

The hull was damaged but the vessel was not in any trouble, according to the Coast Guard, and the safety of the ship “was in no way compromised by this incident.” Passengers were told to don their flotation jackets anyway.

The ship left New York last Sunday on a week-long round-trip cruise to and from the Bahamas.
